High polling was registered for the Tharali assembly bypoll in Chamoli district on Monday that has become a prestige issue for the ruling BJP government in Uttarakhand.

While the BJP is trying to invoke the sympathy factor by fielding Munni Devi, widow of the former MLA Magan Lal Shah, Congress has opted for old party handJeet Ram.

The Tharali seat had fallen vacant after Magan Lal Shah died of swine flu in February this year. Last time about 59 percent polling was registered.

There are five candidates in the fray and 1,02,568 voters will decide the fate of contesting candidates. The 178 polling stations across the assembly seat witnessed peaceful polling.

Congress is keen on taking revenge for the 2017 assembly election defeat at Tharali, while BJP is making every possible effort to win the seat.

Congress desperately wants to win to boost the confidence of party workers before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2017 Magan Lal Shah had registered a convincing victory over Jeet Ram of Congress at Tharali.
