A man took his life by hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope at his rented accommodation in South Delhi’s Khanpur, the Delhi Police said on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as R Chandra Shekhar, 40, a resident of Tughlakabad Extension in Kalkaji, was found dead in Khanpur, where he had been living alone since 2022, a senior officer mentioned.

According to his neighbours, “They noticed a foul smell emanating from the room, after which they broke open the iron window, as the room was locked from inside,” he added.

After entering the room, they found the deceased hanging from the ceiling fan with a rope, one of the eyewitnesses mentioned.

While conducting a local inquiry, it came out that Shekhar was unemployed and was living alone.

Later, it was disclosed that the deceased was addicted to alcohol and narcotics, the officer further added.

However, no foul play has been suspected by the team.

Subsequently, the crime team, along with the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, was called to the scene of the crime to collect evidence and inspect the spot.

According to the police, no suicide note was found at the scene and there were no signs of forced entry by anyone.

As far as the inquiry conducted by far, it appears to be a case of suicide by hanging, the officer mentioned.

The officer said, “The body has been shifted to the AIIMS mortuary for autopsy.”

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS while an investigation is ongoing, the officer stated.
