U’khand gears up to host international alpine ski event

U'khand

Preparations are going on at war footing to host the International Ski Federation’s alpine ski races at Auli (Chamoli). This prestigious meet will be hosted from 15 to 21 January this year in Uttarakhand. In view of reviewing the preparation work, Chamoli District Magistrate Ashish Joshi toured Auli on Tuesday.

Any international Ski Federation event is taking place in India for the first time. International skiers will be travelling to a remote part of Uttarakhand to exhibit their talent and fight for glory.

Light snowfall on the new year eve has thrilled the organisers. Chamoli District Magistrate Ashish Joshi has instructed the nodal officers to complete the assigned work for hosting the international event by 8 January.
The work on preparing the slop is underway and a team of Indo-Tibetan Border Police will be conducting trial run on the slopes once the work gets completed.

The Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) is excited with the development and an international meet taking place in India.

WGFI’s secretary general Roshan Lal Thakur said, “A total of seven events in the men’s category and seven other in the women’s category will take place in Auli. Over ninety skiers from India and two dozen foreign skiers will fight for top honour in the championship.”

Auli last hosted any big championship in 2011, when South Asian Winter Games were hosted there. But, not many major winter games playing country participated it turned out to be an India dominated affair.

This time big number of foreign skiers are expected to visit Uttarakhand and this will provide sports lovers a chance to watch international athletes in action in the hill state.
