UGC unrest in JNU: Left rampages through campus, admin clamps down on violence

After an alleged clash between left-wing groups and ABVP workers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University on 22 February, the JNU administration today issued a statement condemning the “unruly behaviour on campus that caused destruction of public property and its inclusive ethos.” The University has issued a stern warning of strict disciplinary and legal action.

In the statement, the administration noted that several academic buildings on the campus were reportedly locked by a group of protesting students. It also highlighted that the protesting students entered the Central library and reportedly threatened the unwilling students, intimidating them to join the protest. Subsequently, their denial led to a scuffle between two student groups on campus last night.

Taking serious cognisance of these disturbing incidents, the University clearly stated that action will be taken against the culprits under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to ensure a proper academic environment on the campus. Also, the administration warned of strict disciplinary action in case students fail to follow rules and regulations.

The JNU administration underscored its commitment to safeguarding the academic interests and well-being of all the students and protecting the public property of the University.

The JNU administration further urged all the stakeholders to abstain from involvement in any kind of unwarranted activity. The administration expects co-operation from students in maintaining peace and harmony on the Campus.

As per the statement, all classes and other activities are being conducted at the University as per schedule.

Violent clash between student groups

On the night of 22 February, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-affiliated student groups allegedly got involved in a scuffle, leaving several students injured.

ABVP State Joint Secretary Vikas Patel spoke to ANI about the alleged clash, claiming that the left-wing pre-planned the attack in the guise of a student march. He said, “There was a JNU march that night. The march was against the vice chancellor, and they had planned to surround him, but they diverted the entire march towards the School of Languages, where their protest had been going on for the past seven days… From there, they planned to deal with the students who were not attending their protest. So, they closed their classes and library and locked the reading room so they could force them to attend their march.

JNUSU President Aditi Mishra also claimed that “goons and sanghis” were sent by the Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit as the students were protesting her recent remarks aginst Dalit and Black communities. “We have been on strike from last two weeks. VC gave a podcast and gave distasteful comments against Dalits and Blacks. We held protests against these remarks yesterday. This VC sends her sanghis, goons…They pelted stones and abused us,” she alleged, adding that they called the police and locked themselves in the bathrooms to keep safe.
