A train driver was killed after a cement-mixer truck rammed into a Fazilka-bound passenger train coming from Ferozepur at an unmanned crossing in Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Sunday, officials said.

All passengers of the train escaped unhurt.

The impact of the collision was so strong that the truck had ripped into the train’s engine, according to media reports.

“The incident occurred around 10.15 am at an unmanned railway crossing between Jalalabad and Ladhuka Mandi stations,” said Neeraj Sharma, Northern Railway Spokesperson.

The deceased driver of the Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) passenger train has been identified as Vikas Kumar, posted at Ferozpur headquarters.

“Vikas Kumar showed bravery as he tried to avert the collision. He applied emergency brakes to stop the train though he could have saved his life by jumping off but he remained there and was killed,” said Sharma.
