Tree plantation marks World Environment Week in Manipur’s Tamenglong

Celebrating the World Environment week, people in a remote corner of the country carried out tree plantation and cleanliness drive.

People in Tamenglong town, Manipur, as a part of a green movement which started few years ago, planted tree saplings at Godai Hill, under the banner Save Godai, on Thursday. They also carried out a cleanliness drive in the town, where old young and old, rich and poor alike took part.

Every year, during the World Environment week, the people's movement that involves people from all walks of life, including government officials and political leaders, carry out tree plantation to boost forestation in the region.

The event this year is organised by the Rainforest Club Tamenglong in collaboration with the district management, Western Forest Division, 23 Assam Rifles and SET.

The green movement, which began with a small group of local people under the banner Go Green has today grown to encompass more groups to create a wider, bigger and stronger movement to boost forest preservation and conservation and save the environment in this hilly and mountainous region. On May 29, the state government had, in a first in India, declared Dailong village in the district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site.
