Five members of an interstate gang allegedly involved in stealing gold, cash and other valuables from passengers travelling on long-distance trains have been arrested by the Delhi Police, an official said on Tuesday.

According to the police, the accused were wanted in a case registered last month at Maharashtra’s Miraj Railway Police Station.

The accused have been identified as Hawa Singh (65), Amit Kumar (35), Kuldeep (34), Ajay (36) and Monu (32), all residents of Haryana’s Jind and Bhiwani districts, police said.

On November 26, the Miraj Railway Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) following the theft of jewellery worth ₹10 lakh from a train in Pune.

Investigators later found that the five suspects had flown to Goa and were expected to land in Delhi on Sunday, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, in a statement.

The officer added that after receiving information from the Miraj Railway Police, a team was deployed at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The team maintained surveillance there and detained the suspects soon after their arrival.

During the search, police recovered 177 grams of silver items, which the accused admitted had been stolen from passengers in a separate incident.

“Four of the suspects — Singh, Kumar, Ajay and Monu — confessed to their involvement in the Maharashtra case and were subsequently arrested. The Miraj Railway Police have been informed of their detention,” Yadav said.

Police stated that the gang was known for targeting passengers in air-conditioned coaches of long-distance trains, particularly those carrying jewellery or other valuables.

“They often travelled across states by train and bus, blending in with other passengers as they identified potential targets and stole from their bags and luggage,” Officer Yadav added.

All five accused are repeat offenders involved in multiple thefts reported from trains across various states.

Further investigation into the case is underway, police said.
