Traditional Alipurduar marathon marks 42 years

Marking the birth anniversary of India’s one of the greatest freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a total of 56 participants from all over the state took part in the traditional marathon in Alipurduar on Wednesday.

Alipurduar Suryanagar Club, a popular club in the town has been organising the compitition since 1976. “People have been running the marathon since the last forty two years,” a club member said. Alipurduar SP, Avaru Rabindranath flagged off the race which was ran on national highway 31c at Sonapur Choupathi situated under the Alipurduar police station early this morning.

The race for women started from Tapsikhata more situated on Alipurduar-Falakata road at 8am. MLA Sourav Chakraborty and Chairman of Alipurduar Municipality, Ashis Dutta flaged off the race for women . Both the races for men and women ended at Madhab more in the town closely to 8:30 am. “The marathon became 42 years old this year. It has got a very good response from every corner.

We are very happy with the feedback,” said one of the organisers of Suryanagar Club,” Kaushik Paul. Rajesh Kumar Shah of Siliguri, Hasibul Haque of Madarihat and Ashik Rahaman of Alipurduar stood first, second and third respectively in the race for men while Anamika Roy, Samina Khatun and Juthika Sarkar stood first second and third respectively in the marathon for women. All of them hail from Alipurduar district.
