Trinamul Congress MLA of Alipurduar, Sourav Chakraborty, alleged that the BJP was trying to destabilise peace in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts ahead of the three-tier rural elections.

He said that the saffron party had brought in outsiders from Assam with arms and ammunition and that they have been unleashing attacks on Trinamul Congress activists.

“Our candidates had gone for a campaigning at a house at Saptibari. The trio was present there, and all of a sudden, the BJP men attacked them from outside with arms and ammunition. They have brought the outsiders from Kokrajhar (Assam), Mathabhanga, and Changrabandha. BJP is trying to destabilise peace in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts. One of the injured persons is battling for life,” Mr Chakraborty said.

“The state and central leadership of the BJP has to take responsibility for the attacks. We can counter them, but we are confident about a win for our candidates. Our attempts are always to maintain peace, and I have informed chief minister Mamata Banerjee of the situation,” he added. Meanwhile, BJP leader of the district, Bapi Goswami, claimed that the police have arrested BJP leaders without any reason.
