In a move to clip wings of mayor Sovan Chatterjee, the ruling Trinamul Congress on Thursday relieved Mr Chatterjee of duties to select candidates for the upcoming Panchayat polls and other organisational responsibilities.
Though he was not removed as the party’s South 24 Parganas district president’s post, on Thursday’s move assumed significance following the former’s conduct in public life of late and since the party had not taken his absence from the core committee meeting held at Nazrul Manch lightly.
According to Trinamul sources, Anjan Das, Subhashish Chakraborty, who was nominated as Rajya Sabha candidate by chief minister Mamata Banerjee along with Shakti Mandol had been given the responsibility to select candidates and submit the list to party All India general secretary and state party president Subrata Bakshi.
Anjan Das has been asked to sit at Trinamul Bhavan at Topsia on regular basis whereas Chakraborty too has been asked by the party leadership to be present there when the Parliament will not be in session.
Chakraborty has been given additional responsibility to allot party symbols to candidates for the upcoming rural polls.
It is learnt from Trianmul sources the party has issued whip to its leaders to vote for senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi for the Rajya Sabha Polls.
Meanwhile, suspended Trinamul Congress MP Kunal Ghosh on Thursday met party secretary-general Partha Chatterjee. Asked to comment on meeting with Ghosh, party secretary-general said, “ I can only say he is one of my favourite writers. We also discussed issues related to education among other things. I have assured him of looking into the issues with utmost care he has raised with me.”
Chatterjee also said Kunal also wanted to know whether his suspension would be lifted. I told him the final decision would be taken by party supremo Mamata Banerjee on this issue.
