It is unfortunate that Odisha government has rejected the centre’s proposed relaxation of FAQ norms for paddy in 15 districts of the state said Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while adding that the decision of the state will push farmers to sell paddy at distress rates.

Pradhan said the Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had agreed to procure discoloured, damaged, sprouted paddy in 15 districts which were hit by unseasonal rains. The same FAQ relaxation has been extended to Paswan’s home state of Bihar and the state government there has accepted it.

The MSP for such paddy has been lowered marginally. But Odisha, for some strange reason, has not accepted the reduction of MSP for the damaged paddy, regretted Pradhan. In the process, the farmers will suffer and millers will exploit them by offering to buy at a much lower price, charged Pradhan.

It may be noted that the MSP at 1540 per quintal was to be lowered to Rs 1410 per quintal in case of FAQ being relaxed for damaged, discoloured paddy. Odisha government did not agree to the proposal.
