South Dinajpur tribal organisation protests excise raid

Tribal organisation protests

Protesting against misbehavior of alleged excise department officials with some villagers, members of Adbashi Jami Rakksha Committee and a tribal organization in South Dinajpur performed a demonstration and blocked the state highway connecting Tapan and Malda at Vikhahar village in South Dinajpur on Friday. BDO, Tapan and SDO, Balurghat rushed to the spot and somehow managed to control the situation.
According to locals, a group of people on Thursday entered the village in a car and claimed themselves as officials of the excise department.

They initially started a search operation and damaged their hooch. In the meantime, Shayamal Hansda and his wife Rangan Murmu tried to persuade the so called excise personals. They however attacked the tribal family and injured them badly. In protest, more than 200 tribal families in the village came on the street and stopped transportation for more than four hours. “Shyamal Hansda and his family are not associated with the hooch business. Some suspected excise officials attacked them harshly.

We would have had no objection if they would have destroyed hooch making materials and plants. Even we want to stop that. But they have no right to attack the villagers,” said the leader of the Adibashi Jami Rakksha Committee, Mangal Hansda. Meanwhile, the SUCI backed female organization, Mod Uchhed Mahila Committee today organized rally in Balurghat and served a memorandum to the district magistrate demanding total ban on wine trade in South Dinajpur.
