After a lot of acrimony, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday said that Delhi’s Lt Governor Anil Baijal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government were on the same page on providing loans to students for higher education and making guest teachers permanent.
Addressing a press conference, Sisodia said after his meeting with the LG during the day, it was agreed that the loan scheme for the aspiring students should not be stopped.
Sisodia said the LG was right in observing that there is a need for due diligence in the courses and institutes for which loans would be given, so that unscrupulous institutions do not benefit from this and over time NPAs are not created.
Sisodia, who also holds education portfolio, said that the LG wanted his suggestions to be incorporated in the scheme, some of which were already been included, while one or two recommendations will be added later on.
The Minister said he has submitted the files again to the LG and hope that it will be cleared soon.
The LG had earlier asked the AAP government to take the Centre’s opinion on student loans before its implementation. However, the suggestion was not well received by the government which termed it an “unnecessary” move to halt the scheme.
On the issue to recommence recruitment of teachers by Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB), Sisodia said that he apprised the LG that the cabinet has already approved the draft bill to make 15,000 guest teachers in Delhi permanent and on 4 October will pass the bill in the Assembly.
The Delhi government had asked the LG to put on hold the recruitment of teachers by the DSSSB till the criteria to give weightage to guest teachers was readied.
On 28 September, Baijal asked Sisodia to recommence recruitment of teachers by DSSSB, adding that teachers’ vacancies were affecting academics.
