SIR in Delhi: BJP welcomes ECI’s announcement

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, welcoming the announcement of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral lists will be implemented in the national capital, said the exercise will pave the way for removal of the names of undesirable and ineligible voters from the electoral rolls.

Sachdeva said that the BJP has constituted teams of workers at both the state and district levels to assist voters in resolving any issues they might face during the SIR process.

He added that each team includes a lawyer to provide necessary legal support.

The state unit chief of the BJP also stated that the party would extend cooperation to the poll panel to make sure that the names of all Bangladeshi and Rohingyas, who are illegally residing in the national capital, are struck off from the poll rolls.

Meanwhile, the ECI issued instructions to Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of 23 States and union Territories to expedite preparatory work for the upcoming SIR of electoral rolls, which is expected to begin in the month of April this year.

‎In an official communication, the CEC asked CEOs of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, NCT of Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand to ensure that all groundwork related to the revision process is completed at the earliest.

‎Notably, the SIR is a crucial exercise to ensure the purity and accuracy of electoral rolls.
