Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has made all-out efforts to prevent dengue spread this year. Twenty-two of the 47 SMC wards have already been declared vulnerable, it is learnt.

“We have observed that there has been a spurt of dengue cases between July and November in the past few years. Accordingly, we are making necessary preparations. Regular anti-dengue drive is being conducted, which involves house-tohouse survey and awareness programmes. We have also set up vector control teams (VCT),” said the member of the mayor-in-council of sports, education, information at the SMC, Sankar Ghosh. Mr Ghosh also looks after the health department of the SMC.

According to him, four dengue cases were registered in the SMC area since January this year. Sources, however, said that the number of dengue cases was much higher.

The health department has declared 22 wards–1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 18, 20, 24, 28, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46 as vulnerable.

“According to records of previous years, those wards are considered dengue-prone,” said a health department officer. Mr Ghosh said the VCTs conduct anti-mosquito drive, which include spraying, cleaning of garbage in vulnerable wards for 28 days, and for 14 days in non-vulnerable wards

A six-member VCT works in vulnerable wards and a five-member team in other wards.

“This apart, more than 700 health workers conduct a house-to-house survey. They also look into whether there is any vacant land in the area. But as per the population of the town, the number of health workers is inadequate, so we will write to the State Urban Development Agency and health department to take initiatives to appoint more health workers,” he said.

Mr Ghosh said residents can also draw the attention of the civic body to water stagnation and garbage cleaning by posting pictures on WhatsApp number 6294447271. “We will take immediate action, based on their posts,” he said.
