A joint field inspection was conducted in the affected areas of Ranka Block in Sikkim to assess landslide damage, evaluate vulnerable locations, and coordinate immediate response measures after continuous heavy rainfall which intensified on June 28.

The inspection led by Sikkim Krantikari Morcha MLA Kala Rai was attended by Joint Director of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Sonam Wongyal Lepcha, along with other officials.

The team observed severe slope instability and active landslide zones posing significant threats to nearby residential areas.

A house belonging to one Jibalall Pandey sustained damage after a landslide affected one side of the structure, leaving it vulnerable. The residence of Yoga Prasad Pandey, located directly below the slide, was also damaged by debris and remains at risk due to continuing slope movement. The nearby property of Mon Prasad Pandey is similarly threatened as the hillside remains unstable.

At another location, heavy rainfall saturated the hillside above the residence of Padam Gautam, triggering a landslide that damaged one side of his house. Continued rainfall has heightened the risk of further slope failure, making the area highly vulnerable.

The inspection also covered Baliman, where a major landslide struck above the residence of Furzang Lepcha following the intense rainfall on June 28. The landslide completely destroyed a newly constructed house built under the Sikkim Garib Awas Yojana (SGAY) and washed away its protective retaining wall. The area remains highly susceptible to secondary landslides and has been declared unsafe for habitation.

Based on the field assessment, the inspection team recommended the immediate evacuation of families living below active landslide zones or in structurally unsafe houses. Tarpaulins were distributed at vulnerable locations to prevent further erosion.

The team also recommended relief assistance to the affected families in accordance with SDRF norms. It also called for detailed geotechnical assessments and slope stabilization measures be undertaken once weather conditions improve.

The District Administration, DDMA, and other line departments continue to monitor the affected areas closely and remain committed to providing all necessary assistance to affected families while ensuring public safety during the ongoing monsoon season.
