Despite a ban being imposed on the use of polythene in Talcher, the scenario has remained unchanged

Reportedly, the use of plastics in the city has not reduced much. Polythene is being disposed into canals ,river beds and nullahs in the town causing pollution and water logging

According to sources, offcials of the administration tried to curb the rampant usage but failed. Last October,in wake of state wide ban the use was stopped for some days with the shop keepers used paper bags for ferrying the commodities. But the useof polythene was resumed again after some days.

Bauri Bandhu Bej, an environmentalist voiced her concern over the blatant use of the poisonous polythene in urban areas despite ban .

He said, “Polythene can be seen abundantly dumped in drains, river banks and canals in the town . Some people are also going to the extent of burning the pollutant which has far more dangerous consequences.”

Bej urged the local administration to take adequate steps for putting an end to the usage in the subdivision, Talcher sub collector Paresh Chandra Nayak said that he was aware of the menace and is doing his best enforce the ban.

Three days ago a meeting was held which had environmental activists giving their valuable opinions for redressal of the issue.

Officials including the representatives of public sectors were also present. Nayak said, “We have decided to reinforce the ban on polythene and the concerned officials have been instructed for ensuring its proper implimentation. They have already started their work in this direction.”
