As the much-awaited monsoons arrive in the town, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) is all set to activate its civic machinery to tackle rain-related disasters. The town witnessed 712.92 mm of rainfall between 1 June and 23 June. “We have taken all necessary steps to ensure that areas do not remain water-logged. We have asked workers of the conservancy and sanitation department to take leave now, so that maximum services can be provided to the people when needed later. The civic body has arranged for water pump sets to drain out rainwater. A round-the-clock control room will also be opened borough-wise from 1 July. We need to remain alert to tackle the situation,” said a member of the mayor-incouncil of the conservancy department at the SMC, Mukul Sengupta.

All 47 wards of the SMC come under five boroughs (cluster of wards). Officers of the conservancy department said waterlogging cannot be ruled out. “At some places, rainwater recedes quickly. But sudden rainfall for a long time can pose problems. The drainage system in the town has been designed to keep streets from water-logging only if it rains up to a certain level in an hour. Anything beyond that can create water-logging,” said an officer. The civic body has already held a monitoring meeting over disaster management.

Meanwhile, Mr Sengupta said efforts would be made to lift garbage, especially from crowded areas like markets, within 9.30 am every day. Around 370 tons of garbage are collected from the town daily.
