The Rupnagar police on Sunday arrested a granthi (Sikh priest) for desecration of the holy pages of Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh holy book) at Singh Shaheedan Gurudwara Sahib at Dangoli village in the district.

The suspect, Jagtar Singh, works as a granthi in the same gurudwara and indulged in desecration of the holy book as he was forced to work as priest in the village shrine even as he wanted to continue his job as a truck driver.

Addressing a Press conference, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Rupnagar, Raj Bachan Singh, said the sacrilege incident was reported on 9 June.

During the course of investigation, it was found that granthi Jagtar Singh, a resident of Dangoli, was changing his statements on his movements in the Gurudwara repeatedly and the same were found to be false on verification.

“Jagtar had earlier told the cops that at 5:45 am on June 9, he had left the Gurudwara after offering morning prayers and had locked the main door of the Gurudwara but later said that he had left the door open. He also told the cops that he had informed people about the desecration by calling them through phone, but later during investigation, this thing was also found to be false,” the SSP informed.

On interrogation, Jagtar admitted that he works as a truck driver and for the last many days, he was forced work as granthi in the shrine.

“He admitted that he was fed up from the daily duty of Gurudwara and it was becoming hard for him to take out time for Gurudwara from his truck driving. So that is why he committed this heinous crime out of frustration and mental stress,” Singh said.

Jagtar used a sharp edged metal piece for the desecration and left the door open so that people might think that desecration has been done by some stray animal.
