Shashi Bhushan Kumar Singh, an IPS officer and current Director General of Home Guards in Delhi, on Thursday took over as the Commissioner of Delhi Police after being given the additional charge of the post at Police Headquarters (PHQ) here. He succeeds Sanjay Arora, who retires on July 31.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an order appointing SBK Singh, an IPS officer, as the new Commissioner of Police for Delhi.
The order, issued on Thursday, states that “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Sh SBK Singh, IPS (AGMUT:1988), presently posted as Director General of Home Guards, Delhi, is hereby assigned the additional charge of the post of the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, w.e.f. 01.08.2025 and until further orders.”
With the approval of the authority, Singh’s appointment marks a significant development in the Delhi Police leadership. As Commissioner of Police, Singh will be responsible for overseeing law and order in the national capital, ensuring public safety, and leading the Delhi Police force in maintaining peace and security.
A 1988-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre and Delhi’s Director General of Home Guards, Singh has been given additional charge as Commissioner of Delhi Police.
Following a career span of over 36 years, Singh has held several significant positions in the Delhi Police and led police forces in the northeastern states, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
Singh, who is an alumnus of St Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, joined the Indian Police Service after graduation in the year 1986.
In the Delhi Police, Singh has served in key positions such as Additional DCP of South and DCP in both Northeast and Central districts.
Throughout his career, he has held several senior positions, including Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) and Special Commissioner of Police, overseeing critical areas like Intelligence, Security, Law and Order, and Technology and Project Implementation, in addition to leading the Economic Offences Wing.
A farewell ceremonial parade was organised for the outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora at the Parade Ground, New Police Lines, in the morning. Arora, a 1988 batch IPS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, has served in several prominent roles across Tamil Nadu, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and the Central Armed Police Forces. He took charge as Delhi commissioner on August 1, 2022, succeeding Rakesh Asthana.
Earlier, the Delhi government’s home department had issued a notification in June, stating that Arora is set to superannuate on July 31, 2025.
However, one of the biggest achievements of the Delhi Police during Arora’s stint was the busting of an international drug syndicate, resulting in the seizure of narcotics worth over Rs 13,000 crore by the Special Cell. For this, the MHA had appreciated the Delhi Police.
The farewell ceremonial parade is a traditional send-off accorded to outgoing commissioners. It features a formal parade and a speech by the commissioner, followed by the symbolic handing over of charge.
