Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) national spokesperson Sambit Patra on Tuesday fired salvo at Himachal Pradesh (HP) Chief Minister (CM) Virbhadra Singh for rampant corruption in the state and targeted the government over laxity in probing Gudia gangrape and murder case.

Patra was accompanied by former HP chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Shimla MLA  Suresh Bhardwaj, former minister Narender Bragta and local leaders launched the BJP’s campaign ‘Himachal Mange Hisab’ in Shimla in the run-up to Assembly polls in the state.

While talking to media, Sambit Patra said there was gross negligence on the part of state Police in Gudia rape-murder case and prima facie, it appears that attempts were made to shield the real culprits.

“The officials who are entrusted with protecting the people had tried to shield the accused. Eight members of Special Investigation Team (SIT), including one IG had been arrested for custodial death of one of the accused,” he said, adding the incident had tarnished the image of state at national level.

The BJP spokesperson said corruption had become a norm for Congress party.

“The Congress leadership including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and CM Virbhadra Singh were out on bail in the corruption cases but they project themselves as custodians of honesty and moral values. While the fact is that the people know the truth and they would accept such leaders anymore,” he said.

He criticised Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for his statement that India is becoming intolerant country and said it is the Congress party which is still not able to tolerate the huge mandate to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Patra accused the Virbhadra Singh government of indulging in corrupt practices in five years rule and said the government has provided patronage to mining, forest and drug mafia.

“Only BJP could provide honest and transparent governance in the state and the people would vote the party to power in Assembly polls scheduled to be held in coming months,” he said.
