A joint Shiromani Akali Dal-BharatiyaJanata Party (SAD-BJP) delegation on Thursday demanded a judicial inquiry into the murderous assault on forest officials by the sand mafia in Mohali as well as into illegal activities in Punjab.

In a joint memorandum submitted to Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore, the  SAD-BJP delegation briefed the Governor about the murderous assault on two forest officials by the sand mafia in Mohali two days back and alleged the mafia is having open patronage of the ruling Congress party.

It also urged the Governor to direct the Congress government to ensure the safety of life and property of all employees who were working sincerely to check illegal activities besides taking prompt action to bring those indulging in such wonton heinous acts to book immediately. On June 18, block forest official Devinder Singh was attacked with sharp edged weapons by mafia members travelling with a tractor trolley containing illegally mined sand at Seonk village in Mohali. While Singh was grappling for life in a hospital, another department employee who was with him at the nakasite, was also injured and was also admitted to the hospital in a serious condition.

The delegation said all this was happening because there was a sinister nexus between ruling party and criminals in the state, so whenever a probe was started for any heinous crime, it was sabotaged midway by ruling party members.

The delegation also apprised the Governor that the law and order situation in Punjab started crumbling immediately after the Congress government came into being with Amarinder Singh at the helm.

It said in the last one year it had turned from bad to worse with armed robberies, murders, extortion and sensational killings and assassinations becoming the order of the day. Members pointed out that situation had become such that hardcore criminals were openly threatening the chief minister.
