The Monsoon Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday, embracing a digital approach with its paperless proceedings.

Adding to the green initiative and the assembly becoming more environmentally conscious, the entire complex is now powered by a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant.

The legislature, both the ruling party and the Opposition, lauded the hard work put in by the speaker, who, in a very short period since the formation of the 8th Delhi Assembly, made the entire transformation into the paperless digital work mode.

Vijender Gupta, Delhi Assembly Speaker, said, on the digitalisation of the session, “This is the third session of the Delhi Assembly, which is eco-friendly and paperless. Until now, we have not sent any papers of the agenda to the members.”

“The information is provided online, and the electricity is being produced through solar energy,” he added in his statement.

Gupta mentioned that the solar power plant, installed on the rooftop, is expected to reduce the Assembly’s monthly electricity bill by around Rs 15 lakh, or approximately Rs 1.75 crore annually. The savings, he said, would be redirected to developmental work.

AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar, while praising the government for the step, said, “I would like to start by congratulating you, Mr. Speaker, on taking the initiative to make the Legislative Assembly paperless. Your efforts to power the Assembly with solar energy are also commendable, and you deserve praise for this.”

Adding to it, another Opposition MLA, Sanjeev Jha, said, while addressing the session, “I think this is a landmark move, and it’s historic because it was announced in the previous session and fulfilled within 100 days.”

“I was sceptical about the feasibility, but you’ve managed to implement it as promised by working diligently, day by day. It indeed is a great initiative by the government.”
