Ruckus in MP House over Emergency

Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

The ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh came under a scathing attack from the Opposition Congress in the state Assembly on Tuesday during a discussion on the Emergency imposed in 1975 and also from one of its own BJP woman MLAs who accused a senior minister of threatening her family members.

As soon as the proceedings began on Tuesday morning during the ongoing monsoon session, state legislative affairs minister Narottam Mishra called June 26 a ‘black day’ in the country’s history, as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency on this day in 1975.

Mishra made some comments on Indira Gandhi and the Gandhi-Nehru family, which enraged the Opposition Congress MLAs. They began raising slogans against Mishra and demanded that the minister apologise. Congress MLAs reached the well of the house and created a din.

Speaker Sitasaran Sharma had to adjourn the House for 10 minutes. After the House re-convened, the heated exchanges over the Emergency continued and the question hour could not take place. Congress MLAs and ruling party MLAs traded charges against each others’ parties and the Speaker again adjourned the house for half-an-hour.

After the House met again, BJP MLA Neelam Mishra from Semaria cornered her own government accusing a senior minister of harassing her and her family members.

She alleged that on the behest of the minister, police were continuously harassing her husband Abhay Mishra and were trying to implicate him in false cases of illegal mining.

She sat on a dharna inside the House demanding justice and even threatened to quit her MLA’s post if such harassment continued. Congress MLAs supported her and accused the state government of harassing its own woman MLA.
