Rourkela’s Govt college to witness major developments, says principal

The Government Autonomous College, Rourkela is going to witness major developments both in academics and infrastructure said principal of the college Mr Debendra Behera. The college is going to have more number of postgraduation and M Phil courses. “It has been accepted by the government and next session we are going to have M Phil courses in English, Odia and Botany next session,” he said.

The principal informed that next session there will be more numbers of post-graduation courses. “We will offer PG in History, Hindi, Maths and Statistics, along with the already existing courses,” . Presently, this autonomous college is offering PG in English, Odia, Political Science, Economics, Sociology and Psychology.

Besides, there colleges also provided PG in Commerce, and in science in Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. “We have applied for seat extension in Physics and Chemistry from 16 to 32 and are hopeful of getting those enhancement as we have a huge demand for those courses from all over the state,” said Behera. However, it still suffers from acute shortage of both teaching and support staff.

For the PG and M Phil it has a sanctioned strength of 69 faculties but it has only 17 regular teachers. Similarly, to tide over the lack of infrastructural deficiencies several measures are being taken, he said while informing that the 300 bed women’s hostel almost to get completed and construction for the boys hostel will start soon.

Besides, construction of the three storied academic block at a cost of Rs. 7 crores will start soon as tender process is nearing completion, he said. The gymnasium construction will start soon with the funds coming from Western Odisha Development Council (WODC). “We already have the equipment”, he added. MCL will fund a boys common room, informed the principal.
