A low-pressure area which has formed over the south Andaman sea is likely to trigger rainfall in several parts of Odisha from December 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The well marked low-pressure area is currently over the north Sumatra coast adjoining the south Andaman Sea with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above the mean sea level.

The system is likely to turn into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, according to the IMD.

Bhubaneswar Met Office director Sarat Chandra Sahu said as per the preliminary reports, nearly 18 districts of Odisha mostly in the southern parts including Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Khurda, Nayagarh, Boudh, Subarnapur, Balasore, Bargarh, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara, were likely to experience heavy rain.

Farmers are worried as they are yet to harvest their crops.

The farmers have already experienced unusual rainfall, drought and pest attack causing crop loss this year.
