Dense grey clouds took over Delhi in the early hours on Thursday, bringing rain across several parts of Delhi.
Safdarjung, Delhi’s base weather observatory, witnessed 4.6 mm of rainfall until 8:30 am, falling under the ‘light’ rainfall category, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Several other stations across the national capital recorded mild rainfall, offering respite from sweltering temperatures since last week.
At 18.5.0 mm, Chattarpur received the highest amount of rain the city witnessed, which stood in the moderate category. Ayanagar (5.0 mm), Lodhi Road (4.1 mm), Janakpuri (3.5 mm) and Ridge (3.0 mm) were among the other stations that received mild showers, falling in IMD’s ‘light’ rainfall category.
Showers across Delhi reduced the heat in the city; the minimum for Safdarjung dropped by 5.8 degrees Celsius, settling at 22.8 deg C. Ridge recorded the lowest temperature — 21.0 degrees C, departing 4.5 degrees C from the normal.
Strong surface winds also blew over most parts of Delhi between 6:45 am and 7:30 am, according to weather officials. Palam witnessed the strongest gust, with winds speeds of 56 kmph recorded at 7:00 am. Pusa followed a close second, recording wind speeds gusting upto 50 kmph around the same time.
Issuing a yellow alert, the Met department has forecast light to moderate rainfall for Delhi during the forenoon and night, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Strong breeze is also expected for most of the day, blowing at a speed of 40-50 kmph and reaching up to 60 kmph, according to the forecast from IMD.
