Raiganj girl strikes gold in Jakarta games

Invitation Tournament of the Asian Games at Jakarta

Raiganj girl Soniya Baisya has won the gold medal in the 400 metre race event in the Invitation Tournament of the Asian Games at Jakarta in Indonesia on Saturday. Miss Baisya, a resident of Netajipally in Raiganj, timed 53.51 seconds, it is learnt. It was elation back home among family members and friends, while local people gathered to celebrate the victory of the girl with music and colours.

Members of different social welfare organizations of Raiganj and political personalities of the area also congratulated the Baisya family for the achievement of their girl, it is learnt. Miss Baisya, who is now pursuing her Bachelors in Arts Part-1 from the Charu Chandra College in Kolkata, is the daughter to Baren Baisya, a former councilor of Raiganj municipality and a government contractor by profession.

Her mother, Mamata Baisya, is also a former councilor of the Raiganj municipality and is now a housewife. Asked about the feat, Mr Baisya said, “My daughter is active in games and sports since childhood. She even makes me spend time with her in the fields.

Sonia was recently selected for the Invitation Tournament of the Asian Games, while she got an opportunity to practice at the SAI Campus in Trivandrum since September last year. She flew to Jakarta on 9 February and participated in the race where she bagged the gold medal. We are proud of our girl.

Even after belonging to a small town, our daughter has achieved this much.” The Secretary of the District Sports Association of North Dinajpur, Sudip Biswas said, “We are glad with the success of Soniya. She has glorified the sports arena in Raiganj. We thank her family for their support. We will be felicitating her as soon as she flies back here.” Raiganj MLA Mohit Sengupta said, “We are proud of her. We will accord a warm reception to her after her return.”
