The Punjab Congress claimed on Tuesday that the Union government bowed down to the pressure built up by its protesting Members of Parliament (MPs) and announced financial help for the Mosul tragedy victims.

Addressing media persons while protesting against the Centre, president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Sunil Jakhar stated the Parliament has been constituted in Indian constitution so that people’s agony and their issues can be highlighted here to find positive solutions.

Jakhar said that the people killed in Iraq were from different states of the country. “Hence, it was the duty of the Union government to help its people in distress. Becoming a part of the tragedy of Mosul victims have gone through, the Congress-led Punjab government has announced Rs 5 Lakh ex-gratia for each and every victim’s family. The Centre too should have stepped in,” he said.

Jakhar stated that the poor had to go to earn bread and butter to other countries, which are not even safe. This should be a matter of grave concern for the Center.

He added that phenomenon has laid bare hollow promises of the Modi government of creating two crore jobs every year. He demanded Prime Minister to seek apology from the nation for its failure to provide jobs to people and forcing them to seek jobs in unsafe countries like Iraq.

He alleged that the Modi government has closed it down and turned it into Hyde Park wherein anyone can pose a protest but cannot make positive discussions. Jakhar stated that due to this reason, he and his party was forced to stage a protest to make Union government wake up from its slumber.

Jakhar claimed that had the Indian Embassy helped these victims of the Iraq tragedy in time, the precious lives could have been saved.

“But the Modi government left these poor people to fend for themselves. The day since BJP led government has taken over the country, it interests of poor and Dalits have been put on back burner,” he alleged.
