Punjab Cong MPs demand CGST waive off on Langar

The Members of Parliament (MPs) from Punjab staged a protest above the party lines on Wednesday outside Parliament while demanding to waive off the Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST) on Langar.

The protest was jointly held by the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MPs from Punjab including Congress MPs Santokh Chaudhary, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Ravneet Singh Bittu and Congress MP from Bihar Ranjita Ranjan took part in this protest.

An official spokesperson of Congress said, Sunil Jakhar has stepped up from the party line to call MPs of SAD to join the move. SAD leaders, including Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Balwinder Singh Bhunder also came forward to demand the CGST waiver on Langar of Darbar Sahib and Durgiana Mandir at Amritsar.

On this occasion, while interacting with the media persons, Sunil Jakhar said that the Congress government of Punjab had already waived off the state share of GST on the langar earlier. He said that on the same pattern Union government should also come forward to waive of CGST on Langar.

Jakhar said that Langar is served free of cost to everyone without any discrimination to any cast or creed and it is not a business activity to impose tax on it.

He said that this is the work of welfare and has been a part of Indian tradition for centuries.
