PM Modi inaugurates Kochi Metro in Kerala

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Kochi's first metro rail service along with "Metro Man" E Sreedharan, who is rumoured to be NDA's Presidential candidate and also took a ride on the train from Palarivattom to Pathadippalam.

He was accompanied by Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu, Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala, and Ernakulam MP K V Thomas.

According to reports, Kochi is the eighth city in the country to get a metro rail after Kolkata (1984), Delhi (2002), Bengaluru (2011), Jaipur (2013), Gurgaon (2013), Mumbai (2014) and Chennai (2015.)

The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), since its inception has focused on providing world-class amenities to the people of Kochi, apart from easing road traffic by providing end-to-end connectivity.

The Kochi Metro rail will have low-floor buses and autos plying as metro feeders and the KMRL has also roped in Kochi Water Metro, a water transport unit functioning as feeders for those living by the banks of the backwaters.

Apart from a special provision for wheelchairs, coaches have earmarked specially for people with disabilities.
