In an incident that shocked Patna on Monday, 29 January, a schoolboy allegedly shot himself while video-chatting with his girlfriend.

According to the police, the boy, Akash Kumar, aged 19 or 20, was found dead in his bedroom at his home in Saichak area with a gunshot wound in his head. A pistol and his phone were found next to him.

The police confirmed from his girlfriend that they were speaking over video-call. Reports quoting the police say that Akash was insisting that the girl give her consent to his marriage proposal. The girl had sought some time. The police said that the two had a long argument after which the boy shot himself.

“She tried her best to convince and pacify him but he took the extreme step and ended his life,” the DSP (Phulwarisharif) Ramakant Prasad was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

According to reports, the girl tried to dissuade Akash from shooting himself. She had succeeded in making him remove the magazine but a bullet in the chamber remained. The girl also reportedly said that she had called up a close family member of the boy to warn the family but no one intervened.

The police are trying to ascertain where Akash got his pistol from. An investigation is on in the incident.

According to The New Indian Express, the boy’s family does not believe that Akash killed himself.

“We learnt by a phone call that he is dead. We are telling police why we do not believe it is a suicide,” TNIE quotes Sanjay Rai, father of Akash, as saying.
