A 65-year-old woman was killed after a truck carrying water hit her near Shere-e-Punjab on The Mall Road here on Saturday afternoon.

She was rushed to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead.

In the wake of the water crisis in Shimla, the truck after filling water in two water tanks from the underground water storage tank at The Ridge was on its way towards Chotta Shimla for distribution, when it ran over the woman.

Angry people gathered around the truck, however, the driver escaped the wrath of the public as he was found to have suffered an epileptic attack, which led to the accident.    

The deceased has been identified as Uma Keprate, a resident of Chotta Shimla, who was walking with her daughter-in-law and grand-daughter, when the private tipper truck carrying water tank hit her.

Shimla Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Praveer Thakur confirmed the incident and said that a case has been registered under section 279, 304A of the IPC against the driver of the truck.   

“The driver has been identified as 26-year-old Happy Singh of Chakkar and he  is yet to be arrested as he has been hospitalised for epilepsy attack. He will be arrested after he recovers,” he said.
