In the backdrop of a spate of violence in the state before the rural polls, PCC chief Adhir Chowdhury on Monday moved Calcutta High Court and filed a contempt petition that the court’s interim order last week to the police to assist the panchayat candidates seeking to file their nomination has been flouted.

Earlier while the Division Bench of acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and Justice Shivkant Prasad directed the petitioner to file a fresh petition as the Bench which had passed the direction to the police is not sitting, the PCC chief submitted how he had been heckled as the policemen looked on.

I took an intitative to encourage the panchayat candidates of my party to file nomination in Murshdabad, but I was heckled and the persons seeking to file nomination were prevented from doing so thereby rendering the court order infructuous, the PCC chief submitted. Miscreants debarred me from even entering the police station despite the court’s direction to render police assistance, it was submitted.

I seek a contempt rule be issued and the officers responsible for the incident be held in contempt, Chowdhury said. The situation is going from bad to worse and even state election commissioner has said that it is becoming anachic, it was submitted, The superintendent of police must have been communicated the court order of 6 April directing him to render assistance to rural poll nominees, it was submitted. Despite repeated requests the situation remains unaltered.

The ruling party is trying to prevent panchayat nominees from filing nomination wherever the Opposition has organisational base as in Murshidabad, the PCC chief said. An effort is being made to place a political party at upper hand, he added.
