Opposition parties in Gangarampur in South Dinajpur once again failed to file their nomination papers on Thursday after some persons allegedly backed by the Trinamul Congress stopped opposition candidates from filing their nomination papers at the Gangarampur BDO office.

District BJP leaders, on the other hand, have decided to lead their candidates to the nomination submission venues tomorrow. The Left Front in the meantime has appealed for alternative arrangements to file the nominations after some of them were being regularly attacked by miscreants.

“CPI leader Sitanath Lakra was assaulted by some miscreants when he was trying to submit his nomination paper for the Gangarampur panchayat samity. Another leader, Shuku Bakla, a primary teacher by profession, also received injuries when he was going to submit his nomination paper for the 10 no seat of Jahangirpur Grampanchayat,” said a source.

According to sources, the CPI-M has submitted only 45 nominations in the last four days. “Our candidates in Gangarampur block could not submit any of their nomination papers till on Thursday,” claimed a BJP leader.

It can be recalled that three BJP candidates were attacked by some alleged TMC goons and were forced to leave the place recently while filing their nomination papers at the Gangarampur BDO office.

“TMC-backed miscreants are threatening our candidates and are attacking them openly. We could not submit any nomination papers till date. We have decided to file all our nominations tomorrow in the presence of all the district leaders. I have requested the police to ensure proper security arrangements for our candidates,” said the district President of BJP, Suvendu Sarkar.

The district Secretary of the CPI-M, Narayan Biswas said that he has appealed to the District Magistrate as well as the State Election Commission to arrange for an alternative place for submission of nomination papers.

“According to the State Panchayat Election Act, there is a provision to arrange for a substitute place if the notified area is not safe for the candidates. Our party men were even attacked by some miscreants on Thursday, that too in front of the police,” Mr Biswas claimed.
