Close to 15,000 drivers of Ola and Uber have decided to go on a strike in Mumbai on March 10 to vent their ire against the companies’ polices, affecting passengers who depend on app based cab services for their daily commute.

The drivers are upset over the state government’s new rules under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules 2017, which would regulate the pricing of app-based taxis.

The drivers have also threatened to go on an indefinite strike from March 21 if their demands are not fulfilled.

Instead of ferrying passengers, Ola drivers, protesting under the banner – Action Committee of Maharashtra, assembled at Ola office in Andheri to hold peaceful protests. Another demonstration by around 10,000 drivers has been planned at the Uber office in Lower Parel in the afternoon.

Peaceful agitation will be also held at Azad Maidan, where a group of 200 drivers will take part.

The drivers, who are unhappy over a number of issues, said that their major grievances were the companies’ decision to slash incentives, the penalties imposed on them in the form of deduction from payment and other faulty policies.

They said that they were paying more to the companies, which charged 20 per cent of fares on individual trips plus 20 per cent of the total amount earned at the end of the day.

More than 30,000 app-based taxis currently run n Mumbai roads.

The managements of both Ola and Uber were unavailable for comments.
