In a significant breakthrough, the Delhi Police Special Cell on Wednesday said they have arrested don Shorab, a most-wanted gangster and convicted serial killer, from the Park Street area of Kolkata.

The accused, who was serving a life sentence for a high-profile robbery and murder, had been on the run since being released on furlough in May 2025.

Shorab, along with his brothers Salim and Rustom, is known as one of Uttar Pradesh’s most dreaded serial killers. Their criminal history includes multiple murders committed to avenge a family member, establish territorial supremacy, and for extortion. Notably, they were convicted for the daytime robbery and murder of the owner of Gambhir Jewelers in Delhi’s Krishna Nagar.

The police operation to track him down was extensive. After his disappearance, a dedicated team conducted raids across Lucknow, Moradabad, and Delhi, interrogating numerous suspects. A crucial lead came during the investigation of another arms case, where an arrested associate, Naseem, revealed Shorab’s involvement in procuring illegal weapons.

Investigators then pieced together his movements through technical surveillance and manual intelligence. They discovered that Shorab had relocated to Kolkata, where he was staying for his wife’s IVF treatment. Police teams scanned numerous fertility centers in the city and eventually identified the Chennai Fertility Center in Bidhannagar as the one he had visited.

Despite collecting his mobile number details from the hospital, the phone was switched off, forcing police to rely on old-fashioned surveillance. After analyzing CCTV footage and call records, they traced him to the Taltala area, but he had already vacated the location. A police team then maintained a watch near the IVF center for over 15 days.

The persistence paid off with a secret tip-off on November 18, leading to his apprehension from the Park Street area. After interrogation, he was formally arrested and is being produced before a court in Kolkata. The arrest marks the end of an intense, multi-state manhunt for a criminal who continued to orchestrate crimes, including extortion, even from behind bars.
