Nod to land allotment to JU, CU for new campuses

The state government today approved allotment of around five acres of land each to Calcutta University (CU) and Jadavpur University (JU) in New Town for setting up respective campuses. State education minister Partha Chatterjee said, the state industry and infrastructure committee that is headed by chief minister Mamata Banerjee has sanctioned 5.52 acres to CU and another 5 acres to JU.

The authorities of CU and JU had earlier approached Miss Banerjee for land to set up campuses, said Mr Chatterjee adding that both the plots have been given at an annual rent of rupee. “Miss Banerjee wants to set up an educational hub in New Town.

Some of the private universities already possess their campuses in New Town and now plots have been allotted to CU and JU for setting up campuses as well, he said. During the signing of MoUs with the two universities in the concluding session of the Bengal Global Business Summit, Miss Banerjee had announced that the state government has decided to provide land to CU and JU. Prof. Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, vice-chancellor of CU, said that the university will have ‘an integrated science and technology’ campus on the plot that has been allotted in New Town.

Presently, the science and technology departments are spread across three campuses namely in Rajabazar Science College, Ballygunge Science College and Nano Technology campus in Salt Lake. “The proposed campus in New Town will accommodate all the three colleges under a single roof,” she said. Earlier, the state Cabinet approved setting up three new police stations by bifurcating existing ones in Nadia, Birbhum and South 24 Parganas.
