Taking suo motu cognizance of the reported death of three labourers in a building collapse in Daryaganj, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notices to the Delhi chief secretary, commissioner, MCD, and DCP, calling for a detailed report on the matter within 2 weeks.
“The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that three labourers died and several others narrowly escaped when a portion of an under-construction four-story building collapsed in the Daryaganj area of Delhi on August 20. The deceased were migrant workers from Bihar,” the rights panel said in a statement.
The Commission has examined the contents of the news report, which, if true, raise serious issues of human rights violations.
Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi; the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation; and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Delhi, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report, carried on August 21, around 15 labourers were present at the site when the incident occurred. A case has been registered against the owner of the building and the contractor.
The matter came to light when three workers lost their lives after a three-story building collapsed near Sadbhavna Park in Central Delhi’s Daryaganj on Wednesday.
The deceased, who have been identified as Zubair, Gulsagar, and Taufiq, were trapped under the debris, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Nidhin Valsan (Central) said that the three men who died were working on site when the incident happened.
Adding to his statement, “Civic authorities, including DDMA, have been informed, and rescue efforts are underway. Legal action will be taken after verification of facts.”
