The New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) flagship campaign “Dilli Ko Koode Se Azaadi” has given a major push to cleaning up Delhi’s bustling commercial markets. At the heart of the drive is the ‘Roko Toko Abhiyan’, which blends enforcement with awareness to promote litter-free spaces.
To support the initiative, the Council is also running Micro Material Recovery Facilities (MMRFs) cum RRR centres at several locations — including Bengali Market (footwear), Major Dhyan Chand Stadium (paper recycling), Connaught Place (plastic), Khan Market (e-waste), and Malcha Marg (textiles). Each facility specialises in a particular waste stream, helping ensure efficient segregation, recovery, and upcycling while easing pressure on landfills, noted the agency.
On Monday, the agency stated that Delhi’s cleanliness campaign has gained momentum with over 400 events organised across the city until August 15. The movement was joined by people from all walks of life, including Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Market Traders Associations( MTAs), public representatives, and citizens in a common resolve towards a cleaner capital.

In an official statement, the agency said the initiative has grown since its launch at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Place. It has expanded from office and workplace cleanliness drives across 23 departments to school-level activities in 138 institutions, market-led efforts in 12 markets, and shramdaan in 15 JJ clusters.
Ahead of the campaign, NDMC also declared Bharti Nagar and Satya Sadan as ‘Anupam Colonies’—model zero-waste habitations under its sustainable city vision. The agency plans to add Aradhana Colony and New Motibagh to the list, turning them into neighbourhood-level examples of circular waste management.
