Nathula trade season begins

The 12th edition of the bilateral border trade between India and China from the Nathula Border resumed on Tuesday. The trade will last until 30 November.

The trade resumed amid an inaugural function attended by officials from the Commerce and Industries Department, Government of Sikkim, Customs, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Immigration Department and traders.

On behalf of the government of Sikkim, the Secretary, Commerce and Industries Department, SK Pradhan, formally declared the trade open for the season for the year 2018 in the presence of Joint Secretary N Jaswant, officials and traders from both the sides.

“The trading days are from Monday to Thursday and trade will continue till 30 November, 2018,” officials said. Despite inclement weather in the past few days, the trade opening day was blessed with sunny weather and officials and traders of both the sides reached Nathula for the resumption in droves.

“Officials and traders from India and China wished each other a prosperous trade and assured best possible help to each other for a smooth and peaceful trade for the year,” officials said.

It may be mentioned here that the border trade lasted for a mere two weeks last year, given the Dokhlam standoff between the two neighbours. “Traders are this time around hopeful that unlike last year, business will begin and run smoothly without any obstruction,” the officials added.
