National Annual Report & Index on Women’s Safety, ‘NARI 2025’, launched on Thursday by Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), revealed shocking statistics about the state of women’s safety in our country.
According to the report published by the Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA), nearly 40 per cent of women in our country do not feel safe. The safety concerns elevate after dusk, owing to poor lighting and a lack of visible security, as noted in the report.
The study also highlighted poor trust in the authorities — 75 per cent of women lacked confidence in the proper resolution of the complaints regarding crimes against them. The report reaffirmed their finding and stated that the reporting of unsafe incidents is limited, with only 33 per cent of females reporting their experiences to authorities. The action taken by law agencies is even lower, with action taken against only 16 per cent of cases.
Speaking at a press conference at the India International Centre, New Delhi, Rahtkar lauded the reports and said, “ The launch of NARI 2025 is a step forward in understanding the safety concerns of women in our cities. …This report brings the real voices of women and will help us work with policymakers and institutions to create safer and more supportive spaces for women across India.”
The study surveyed 12,770 women across 31 cities nationwide. Delhi and Faridabad ranked among the top five unsafe cities on the NARI index, with nearly 42% of women reporting they do not feel safe. The figure was even higher in Ranchi, where 44% of women expressed feeling unsafe.
While the eastern city of Kohima, where over 80 per cent of women felt secure, was reported as the most harmless place for females in our country. Other cities that were reported to be relatively safe for women included Vishakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar, and Mumbai, with nearly 70 per cent of women feeling protected.
“With NARI 2025, our aim is to give a clear picture of how women experience safety in their daily lives,” said Prahallad Rout, MD, Pvalue Analytics, a data science agency that contributed to the analysis of this report.
