Delhi Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a 30-year-old man here and seized 97 ATM cards from his possession with which he would allegedly cheat people.
The accused, identified as Sunil Kumar, allegedly cheated several people by swapping their debit cards with fake ones, said Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Delhi. “In the garb of helping people who were not fluent with using an ATM machine, the accused, Sunil Kumar used to offer his help where he used to swap the original debit card of the victim with a fake card. By the time, the victim was trying to punch in his or her ATM pin, the accused used to memorise the pin,” said Vijay Kumar.
He added, “Once the victim was unable to withdraw the amount, he left. Within a few minutes, Kumar used to withdraw cash and flee.”
Police on Thursday said that they got to know about the cheating after they received a complaint from one Rajender at Madipur police station on September 10.
The complainant alleged that he went to an ATM to withdraw money where two persons changed his debit card on the pretext of helping him and later Rs. 77,000 was withdrawn from his account.
“The accused, Sunil Kumar used to run a gang. He used to work with his brother-in-law and other relatives. They targeted women, children or senior citizens who were inept in dealing with ATM transactions. The gang had duped several people in Delhi and Haryana.
