Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged Union human resources development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar to ensure that candidates are not affected due to unavailability of the Bengali medium question papers of NEET UG 2018 examination that was conducted on Sunday.

In a letter written to Mr Javadekar, Miss Banerjee condemned the irregularity saying that it left many students appearing from Bengal in trouble. It was reported that in many examination centres the students were not provided with Bengali question papers in time, many were provided photocopies of question papers which bore the same candidate code for multiple students and in many cases the photocopies of question papers were illegible.

It is also reported that many students were forced to write answers using English and Hindi question papers, Miss Banerjee complained. “I am writing to you about the irregularities that took place in the examination on Sunday in West Bengal for candidates appearing through Bengali medium. For example, at the examination centre located in Cossipore Central School in Kolkata, 600 students appeared for the examination but only 520 question papers in Bengali medium was supplied. Similar was the case in Techno India School at Konnagar in Hooghly district,” she wrote.

Miss Banerjee reminded the HRD ministry that similar concerns were highlighted in the previous year’s examination. “We were subsequently assured that such regularities would not be repeated. It appears that the examination conducting authorities have not been careful enough to ensure that the examination is meticulously held and the career of prospective candidates not jeopardized,” the letter read.

“I strongly urge you to take immediate action against persons responsible for such irregularities and also take suitable measures so that the candidates are not adversely affected due to non-availability of appropriate question papers and if needed, reexamination be scheduled to give a fair opportunity to all such candidates.

“May I also suggest that a coordination mechanism at institutional level be established with the state government and CBSE for making proper arrangements for examinations in future,” the letter further read.
