Mamata takes ‘cashless’ jibe at Centre

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday taunted the Central government for the few multi-crore scams that have come to the fore during the NDA government and said that the Centre wanted to make the country go “cashless,” but “it has instead made banks go cashless.”

She was referring to the very recent scam involving Nirav Modi, a jeweller, who allegedly misappropriated crores of rupees from banks. As she addressed a public meeting at the Gangarampur stadium in South Dinajpur, Miss Banerjee also inaugurated 70 new projects and announced a new university for the district, while also marking the International Mother Language Day.

During her day-long visit to the district, the CM also flagged off more than 100 new projects for the development of the district and declared the Khan Utsav-2018 open by beating the traditional drum.

As she marked the language day, Miss Banerjee offered tributes to martyrs of the mother language movement in Bangladesh and congratulated the people of Bangladesh on the occasion. “Our language is the same.

We have good understanding among us. We have good relations with Bangladesh and it will continue in the future too. I congratulate all the people of Bangladesh on International Mother Language Day,” she said.

“I selected Gangarampur Stadium to celebrate the International Mother Language day as Gangarampur is very close to the international border,” she added.

“Like all other districts, we have decided to open a new university in South Dinajpur for higher studies. It will take some time, but we will definitely start that. This will be very helpful for the people of the district,” she said.

It may be recalled that various social organizations of South Dinajpur district had been demanding for a new university for the past few years. In her 35-minute speech, she slammed the central government on various issues.

“The central government wanted to introduce the cashless system in the country, but they have made banks go cashless. They are encouraging frauds and looters and giving them shelter in their party. It seems the central government will impose fraud taxes on the people of India.

Some people are looting banks and the central government is supporting those fraud people,” she said. She added that big businessmen were looting the country, but that the central government was silent. “Banks often take strong steps against Self Help Group members and farmers if the fail to pay their loan installments and confiscate their property and harass them. But they are silent when big businessmen go on a looting spree,” she claimed.
