Setting aside political rivalry, chief minister Mamata Banerjee wished former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on his 74th birthday and sent cake, card and sweets to his residence on Thursday.

In a tweet Miss Banerjee wrote: “Birthday greetings to Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, former Chief Minister of West Bengal.” Miss Banerjee’s courteous move received appreciation from all quarters for displaying political courtesy and rising above petty political differences.

Her move came a day after she had asked the Kolkata Municipal Corporation authorities to repair Mr Bhattacharjee’s two-room apartment in Palm Avenue as it badly needed renovation. She had also offered Mr Bhattacharjee to shift to a government guest house with his family till his flat was completely repaired.

Miss Banerjee has always taken initiative of maintaining a healthy relationship with her predecessor. Few months back, she had called upon Mr Bhattacharjee when he fell ill at the CPI-M party office and assured of all kinds of medical assistance.

After coming to power in 2011, Miss Banerjee had invited the former chief minister at her swearing-in ceremony which the latter had accepted and was seated in the first row. Meanwhile, Miss Banerjee’s birthday wishes for Mr Bhattacharjee is also conceived as a calculative political move.

Earlier, she told in Assembly that she would be happy if Manik Sarkar continued to retain the control over the state of Tripura, which had continued to be a red bastion in the backdrop of the fall of Left governments in Kerala and Bengal, for “greater interests”. “I am not into blind Opposition.

You are on the verge of losing the elections in Tripura. But I would have been happy if you won the polls for a greater cause (to keep BJP at bay). Try to look at the big picture.

Your haughtiness and ego have led to your downfall. You didn’t participate in the anti-BJP rally that Lalu Prasad had called in Patna”. On the other hand, governor Keshari Nath Tripathi conveyed his greetings to the people of West Bengal on Holi.
