Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to announce the name of the state president of Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) on 28 August, on Trinamul Chhatra Parishad day, sources at Trinamul Bhawan said on Sunday.

The state education minister, Mr Partha Chatterjee, along with party’s youth wing president Abhishek Banerjee, held a meeting on Saturday with the members of TMCP from across the state to discuss preparations for the 28 August rally on Mayo Road.

Party sources revealed that TMCP members across the districts and in the city have been told to ensure a huge turnout on that day to give befitting reply to the BJP, who have selected the same venue for holding a meeting with their national president Amit Shah on 11 August.

Later, the education minister also met the members of the ‘Teachers Cell’ including teachers from various districts to discuss the organisational strategies with them.

According to sources, this year, in the absence of a state president of TMCP, the celebration of TMCP’s foundation day’ is supposed to take place under the leadership of Mr Chatterjee, Mr Banerjee and party’s all India general secretary Subrata Bakhshi.

The name of the president of the TMC students’ wing, would however, be announced by the chief minister on 28 August. It may be recalled that the former TMCP state president, Ms Jaya Dutta, was removed from her post by the chief minister in the month of June.

The decision was taken after allegations of extortion of money for admission by TMCP student unions were heard at various Calcutta University-affiliated colleges. Despite a declaration that the post of the president will be filled up within 10 days, the post remains vacant till date.
