Independence war

The independence of Bangladesh was declared on 26 March, 1971, at the onset of the Bangladesh Liberation War.

On 17 April 1971, the Provisional Government of Bangladesh issued a proclamation on the basis of the previous declaration and established an interim constitution for the independence movement.

Bangladesh achieved its liberation after systematic suppression by West Pakistan led to a civil war in East Pakistan in which several thousand were killed.

However, India came to aide of erstwhile-East Pakistan. The civil war attracted international attention, while Pakistan was supported by China and US, on the other hand, India was supported by erstwhile-Soviet Union.

India’s entry into the civil war led to third Indo-Pak war since independence. Indian forces succeeded in pushing back Pakistani forces and liberated the nation. East Pakistan later emerged as an independent nation of Bangladesh.
