Chief minister Mamata Banerjee today called upon the authors to be protectors of ‘documentation’ and ‘books’ and stop attempts to distort history and science. Speaking at the inauguration of the 42nd International Kolkata Book Fair at Central Park in Salt Lake, Miss Banerjee said: “I have one request to the authors and book lovers.

You are the protectors of books. Please ensure that no one can distort history and distort science.” Few weeks back, minister of state for human resource development Satyapal Singh had claimed that Darwin’s theory of evolution was wrong. The scientist community had vehemently protested against such “unscientific claims”.

Similarly, the historians too have criticised the RSS and Sangh Parivar for their attempts to distort history to forward their own Hindutva agenda. Speaking about the theme country France, Miss Banerjee said: “While France is the cultural capital of the world, Kolkata is India’s cultural capital. We have many things similar with France.”

The chief minister released nine books today. Three of them are translations of her works and another book is based on the life and struggle of chief minister herself. Miss Banerjee, who is also an author and a poet, released her own books of non-fiction and poetry.

French delegates along with the French Ambassador to India, Alexandre Ziegler, was also present at the event. The next book fair will be inaugurated on 19 January, the chief minister said.
