West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday advised the BJP not to be so excited about winning in Tripura as it was much more of a defeat of the CPI-M due to its “arrogance and haughtiness” and “non functioning and negligence” of the Congress.

“It is a defeat of CPI-M’s haughtiness and arrogance. They (read BJP) spent money like water through hosepipe. BJP won through malfunctioning of EVM, bringing people from outside and through a huge deployment of central forces. I’m unable to understand as to why CPI-M did not lodge any protest at the Election Commission against the BJP.

The reason behind CPI-M surrendering before the BJP is a big mystery for us….It may be possible that they have been blackmailed or threatened by central agencies,” she said while responding to reporters prior to leaving Nabanna.

Stunned by its defeat in Tripura Assembly elections, the CPI-M on Saturday said massive deployment of money, apart from other resources, was behind the BJP’s victory in the state where the CPM-led Left Front had been ruling for 25 years.

Noting that Tripura voters have given their mandate for a BJP-IPFT government in the state, the CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “We thank the people of Tripura for giving us the opportunity to serve them for the past 25 years. We will continue to oppose BJP.”

Yechury said: “It is imperative for those who believe in India’s Constitutional ideals to defeat the nefarious designs of the BJP-RSS. The battle is on.”
